Auth0 CEO: How Eliminating Fear Helped Him Branch Out

By: Fitz Mullins | ExecuTalks | March 2nd, 2020

On this week’s episode of ExecuTalks, we had the honor of speaking with Eugenio Pace and learned how his past shaped him into the acclaimed entrepreneur and CEO he is today.

A true student of life, Eugenio is an Argentinian immigrant that has embodied the American dream. Growing up in Argentina during the 1970s life was not easy for Eugenio, but he made the most of his childhood and eventually made his way to the US. Here are our 3 favorite takeaways!

1. Work with what you have

During his childhood, Eugenio didn’t have the common luxuries that most of us enjoy today. Living under a military dictatorship, he was drafted as a teenager and narrowly avoided going to war, which caused great agony for his mother and grandmother. Despite these hardships, Eugenio was able to remain optimistic and make the best of his situation, which meant working with what he had in his environment. In his case that included the orange trees that lined his neighborhood. In the morning, Eugenio would wake up early and ride his bike around collecting as many oranges as he could fit in his basket. He would then return home and use the oranges to make marmalade with his grandmother. Although they never sold any of that marmalade, Eugenio fell in love with manufacturing. When life hands you lemons make lemonade, or in Eugenio’s case, marmalade from oranges.

2. Embrace your passions

Eugenio knew from a young age that he wanted to be an engineer. In his spare time, as a teenager, he was constantly working to create new systems. By the time he was gifted a hand-me-down TI99 home desktop, he was able to create a customer relationship management tool that functioned just like a modern-day application. Eugenio was able to accomplish this feat during a time when smart phones and Google weren’t even a working concept. Eventually he sold his concept to a company. That early investment in his passion boosted his confidence and helped him realize that he could succeed in his chosen line of work.

3. Live without regret

After a very successful career at Microsoft that allowed Eugenio to travel the world and provide for his family, he began to have something of an existential crisis. He loved his time at Microsoft and lived a very comfortable life by all standards, but he still felt that something was missing. Despite learning invaluable lessons like how a successful company functions and scales, Eugenio couldn’t help but ask himself if he was fulfilling his true purpose. Objectively, he had everything he needed. Yet, the more he thought about his own mortality the more he realized his only regrets were the opportunities he hadn’t taken. While having this difficult conversation with himself, Eugenio eventually realized that the only fear we have is self-constructed and that is how he got the courage to leave Microsoft and follow his own passions.

Auth0 was born.

If there’s one take away from our conversation with Eugenio, it is to try new things and don’t be afraid of failures. In fact, erase failure from your vocabulary because even when you fail, you’re still learning.
