Exclusive CMO Interview: Elissa Fink On How To Find Your Purpose

Each and every one of us comes into this life with a set of unique talents and special gifts.
Though, many of us struggle to identify the special qualities we have as being of any real importance. I'm here to tell you you're WRONG! I promise you have at least one SPECIAL skill that sets you apart from the crowd. You are special and unique in your own way and you are here on this beautiful planet for a reason.
It is your obligation though to find out what that specific gift is in order to live a happy and fulfilling life. There is no magic wand to wave that will reveal it. You need to go out there and experiment with anything and everything you feel interests you until you feel it in your gut that what you're working towards is your way of giving back to our society and your true purpose.
I recently sat down with former CMO of Tableau Software Elissa Fink and talked about how one can go about uncovering their purpose. Elissa made an analogy of "eating dessert before dinner" that rang so deep in my soul. She compared finding your true purpose to your early childhood.
At some point when you were a kid, while at the dinner table, you had vegetables on your plate but noticed dessert on the counter and all of a sudden wanted that instead of the veggies, didn't you? Elissa says the same thing applies to uncovering your gift.
She advises to become conscious of when you feel time is going by fast. And to constantly be "tuning into when you're really feeling like you're in the flow and loving what you're doing." Another hint she shares is be aware of what it is you tend to do the first thing every morning. As she mentions, "people tend to tackle the things they love to do the very first thing in the morning." And if you feel like that's tough to keep track of, she recommends to write the ideas you think about or the tasks you tackle each morning in a journal and look back later to find a pattern.
With that said...
What comes naturally to you? What are your strengths? Are you leveraging your natural gift in your career? If not, keep in mind that it is NEVER too late for a career change.
